ירדתי למטה ללובי של המלון בכדי לשאול איך להגיע לקואלפ ואיך לטייל באזור. ברגע שהפקידה בלובי שמעה שאני רוצה להגיע לקואלפ היא נכנסה ללחץ, התקשרה למישהו וקראה לאדם מהמלון שילווה אותי מיד למרכז העיר ולסיור שיוצא בתוך כמה דקות. בקושי הייתי במלון עשר דקות אחרי הנסיעה הארוכה לצ׳צ׳פויאס וישר יצאתי לדרך. אפילו לא הספקתי לקחת את התיק שלי שנשאר בחדר. מהר לרכב. הצטרפתי לקבוצה של כעשרה אנשים, מדריך ונהג. נסענו כשעה וחצי שגם אותם ישנתי היטב. לבסוף הגענו לכפר מגדלנה ולתחנת הרכבל שמתחת לקואלפ. קואלפ היא עיר אינקה עתיקה, שבדומה למאצ׳ו פיצ׳ו ממוקמת גבוה על פסגה של הר. בנוסף קואלפ נחשבת לעיר השנייה ביופיה אחרי המאצ׳ו פיצ׳ו אך שאליה מגיעים שבריר מכמות התיירים במאצ׳ו פיצ׳ו. עם כמה שהאווירה בכפרים שבדרך ענייה ופשוטה, הרכבל שמעלה לקואלפ סופר מודרני וחדשני. מצחיק לראות את הניגודים. רואים שהרכבל מביא גאווה רבה לפרואנים שמרגישים שהם מיישרים קו עם המערב והופכים למדינה ״מודרנית״. כנראה שרוב הפרואנים לא עלו בחייהם על רכבל ולכן ישנם הוראות בטיחות רבות ומוגזמות טרם העלייה אליו. הרכבל לוקח כעשרים דקות ומעלה 900 מטר בגובה שבקצהו מגיעים לתחנה שמחוץ לחומות העיר. בקבוצה הייתה פרואנית מעצבנת שהטלפון שלה התקלקל ולכן ביקשה ממני שאצלם אותה ואשלח לה את התמונות. ברוב נחמדותי הסכמתי כי לא תיארתי לעצמי שהיא תשגע אותי במהלך כל הסיור. היא עצרה בכל פינה ודרשה תמונה בפוזות מטומטמות. בשלב כלשהו זה עלה לי על העצבים ופשוט התחמקתי ממנה ונצמדתי למדריך. גם העובדה שחברי הקבוצה העירו לה לא עזרה והיא המשיכה לשגע אותי. המדריך של הקבוצה היה מעולה! אכפתי ומסור, מצד אחד לא חפר ומצד שני לא ויתר על אף הסבר חשוב. עלינו במעלה השביל ונכנסנו אל העיר דרך שער צר בחומה. עתיקות ושרידים של אלפי בתים עגולים, שחלקם שמורים ובמצב טוב מאוד (יחסית לאתר ארכיאולוגי). הנוף מהעיר מהמם ביופיו, עמקים רחבים וירוקים, הרים גבוהים וטרסות צבעוניות מקשטות את האזור. בני האינקה היו יורדים במהלך היום ועובדים בחקלאות בשדות ובטרסות, ובערב חוזרים למעלה אל העיר. בעיר בולטות שתי תרבויות, התרבות הצ׳צ׳פויאנית שהייתה השלטת באזור, ותרבות האינקה. לכן כמעט כל המבנים והבתים עגולים לחלוטין, דבר שלא מקובל בערי אינקה אחרות. הסתובבנו בעיר כשעתיים, ראינו את המזבח (שעליו חרוט פרצוף מתקופת האינקה), את שעוני השמש ואת בתי וחומות העיר. מקום סופר מרשים. ירדנו למטה וחיכינו לרכבל. כמובן שלחוסר מזלי ירדתי בקרונית עם הפרואנית המעצבנת שהזכירה לי כל כמה דקות לשלוח לה את כל התמונות. ברוב טיפשותה כשהגענו למטה היא וחברתה החליטו שאנחנו צריכים לחכות בתחנת ההסעות שלמטה ולכן ירדנו בהסעה למרות התנגדותי. דבר שגרם לעיכוב של דקות ארוכות עד שהמדריך הבין לאן נעלמנו. לבסוף נסענו ואכלנו צהריים. הזמנתי טורטיה ולא דמיינתי לעצמי שטורטיה בספרדית משמעותה חביתה. בלית ברירה נאלצתי לאכול את זה. כנראה הביצה הראשונה שאכלתי מזה שש שנים. עלינו על האוטו וחזרנו אחרי הצהריים המאוחרים לצ׳צ׳פויאס בכבישים המפותלים. למרות הפרואנית ולמרות החביתה נהניתי מאוד בקואלפ בשל המדריך המעולה לו אפילו נתתי לו טיפ (למרות שבפרו זה לא מקובל). בערב יצאתי לאכול במסעדת בשרים ולא האמנתי שלמנה של סטייק אנטריקוט עם המון תוספות ושתייה שילמתי כארבעה דולר. טירוף.
למחרת החלטתי לצאת ולטייל למפלי גוקטה, המפלים השלישיים בגובהם בעולם – 771 מטרים שנופלים בשתי פעימות, כאשר הפעימה השנייה היא מעל 550 מטר. במלון הציעו לי לעשות את הטיול איתם אבל העדפתי לעשות את המסלול לבד. לפני שיצאתי לדרך היו לי מספר סידורים לעשות. ראשית קניתי סים לטלפון וחבילת גלישה ולאחר מכן הלכתי לבית החולים וקיבלתי אנטיביוטיקה חדשה לזיהום בלחי שלי. רק לאחר מכן הלכתי אל הטרמינל ועליתי על מיניבוס שהוריד אותי באמצע הכביש ובצומת הדרכים אל הכפר קוקצ׳ימבה, ממנו מגיעים אל המפלים. טוקטוק הזוי הסיע אותי את חמשת הקילומטרים מכאן עד הכפר. דרך משובשת, מפותלת ותלולה מאוד. הייתי משוכנע שהטוקטוק הולך לשבוק חיים באמצע הדרך ואאלץ להמשיך ברגל. באורח פלא הגעתי לקוקצ׳ימבה. החלטתי לאכול צהריים מיד שכן ההליכה תיקח כמה שעות. התמהמהתי ביציאה, עד שהבנתי שצריך לקנות כרטיס למסלול והשכרתי פונצ׳ו נגד הגשם השעה כבר הייתה שתיים בצהריים. המסלול אורך חמישה וחצי קילומטרים לכל כיוןן, כלומר 11 קילומטרים עם עליות וירידות רבות. לפי מה שהמקומיים אמרו, לוקח כשעתיים וחצי לכל כיוון. כבר הבנתי שהם מגזימים עם הערכות הזמנים שלהם ולכן האמנתי שאוכל לחזור לפני החשכה. בפועל למרות העליות והירידות הרגשתי חזק מאוד, הלכתי מהר ואפילו רצתי בחלק מהזמן. הגעתי את המפל בתוך כשעה וחזרתי בשעה ורבע. ההליכה מאוד יפה, הולכים רוב הזמן בתוך יער סבוך וירוק. אינספור סוסים סוחבים את התיירים העצלנים במעלה העליות הקשות. השמיים לא הפסיקו להיות מעוננים וכל כמה דקות ירד גשמון שדאג להשאיר את המסלול מלא בבוץ. את המפלים עצמם רואים מספר פעמים לאורך הדרך וככל שמתקרבים אליהם מבינים כמה הם גבוהים. לבסוף מגיעים ממש מתחת למפל והגובה פשוט לא נראה אמיתי. כמו גורד שחקים מטורף שדורש להטות את הראש אחורה ולקבל נקע בצוואר. המפל מוקף בקרקס מצוקי יפהפה שלהיות בו מבהיר לך כמה קטן אתה לעומת הטבע. בדרך חזרה הצלחתי להחליק באופן מביך ליד המון תיירים אבל למזלי מלבד על היד לא התמלאתי בבוץ. הספקתי להגיע באור מוחלט לקוקצ׳ימבה, לקחת את הטוקטוק לכביש ולתפוס מיניבוס לצ׳צ׳פויאס. איזה מזל שעשיתי את המסלול כל כך מהר. אכלתי ערב, הוצאתי כסף וארגנתי את חפציי לקראת הנסיעה למחרת אל הג׳ונגלים הפרואנים, לעיירה יורימגואס שבה אקח ספינה על האמזונס ואשוט אל העיר איקיטוס, שנמצאת באמת באמצע שומקום.
